A violent crime reduction plan is showing promising results in the San Antonio area. The plan was developed by the University of Texas San Antonio Criminology department and Criminal Justice Professor Michael Smith. The study is centered on "hot spot policing" which divides the city into grids and identifies areas with the highest rate of violent crime. According to Professor Smith, the study has resulted in a more than 41-percent decrease in specific violent crime in those targeted areas.
