Place: East Coast Year: 1972 Event: A powerful storm hit the Northeast with heavy rains, flooding and high winds. Gale warnings were posted for the Atlantic Coast from VA to ME. In New York City, the fierce coastal gale, with winds gusting to 60 mph, drenched the city with a record 5.1 inches of rain. The wind-driven rain trapped thousands in a massive traffic jam throughout Manhatten. 2,500 telephones were out of service; 4,000 homes were blacked out in Brooklyn.
