Hurricane Dorian Hits Bahamas As Category 5 Storm

The Bahamas Map

Hurricane Dorian is lashing the Bahamas as a "catastrophic" Category 5 storm. The National Hurricane Center called it the strongest hurricane in modern record to hit the northern part of the islands. The storm made landfall this afternoon with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour and gusts of up to 220 miles per hour at Elbow Cay. Forecasters say Dorian's track will bring it dangerously close to Florida's east coast late Monday through Tuesday. Mandatory evacuations are underway in several Florida counties with more to follow tomorrow. As of the latest update, the hurricane was about 175 miles east of West Palm Beach.
