San Antonio State Hospital to Get an Upgrade

The century old San Antonio State Hospital is in line for nearly $16 million to begin a long awaited renovation, and eventually a total reconstruction, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

"The constituents I represent deserve to have a modern state hospital that delivers the best care possible to residents of Bexar County," said State Sen. Carlos Uresti (D-Bexar).  "The current San Antonio State Hospital is full of potential, but the buildings on the campus are many decades old.  Mental and behavioral health treatment has come a long way since the 1940s."

The San Antonio State Hospital serves about 35,000 patients per year.

The entire cost of a new facility in San Antonio is estimated at $270 million.
