Hundreds of H-E-B Employees Head to Houston to Reopen Stores

With cheering and honking of horns, some 800 volunteer H-E-B employees left downtown today on their way to Houston, to help reopen the supermarkets there which have been closed and damaged in Hurricane Harvey, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Team leader Larry Gembler says people jumped at the chance to make the trip.

"Texans just never give up," he said. "We are going to take care of each other, we are going to do everything that we can to take care of people that we serve."There were ten H-E-B's in Houston damaged by Harvey.

Tad Lukehart says he can't wait to get to Houston and helping people get their neighborhood grocery stores back.

"We are in the people business," he said.  "Yes, we sell groceries, but we are really here to make the lives of your customers better."

He pointed out that neighborhood H-E-Bs will be critical for the rebuilding of neighborhoods where people have lost everything in the storm and, in many cases, have to start from scratch.
