SAPD Officers on the Way to Houston to Help HPD

Some thirty San Antonio Police Officers left this afternoon for a two week tour of duty in Houston, to help that city's police force deal with the stress of Hurricane Harvey, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Deputy Chief Alex Trevino says the officers will also be taking some San Antonio police vehicles up I-10.

"We understand there have been a lot of police vehicles that have been flooded out due to the flooding," he said.  "So we will take 19 police vehicles to provide support."

The HPD is dealing with patrolling evacuated areas, helping rescue people from flooded areas, and dealing with looting, along with the usual police duties in a major city.

The HPD also lost one of its officers on Tuesday, a veteran officer who drowned while on his way to a rescue operation.

Trevino says SAPD are also dealing with the pressure of the storm here at home.

"As far as our operations here, they are ongoing," he said.  "We have more than a thousand evacuees in shelters, with the expectation of another six thousand evacuees coming in from the City of Houston and that area."
