San Antonio has now taken in 1428 evacuees from Harvey, and 874 remain in shelters, News radio 1200 WOAI reports. The remainder have are in private homes, hotels, or have returned to their homes in the Coastal Bend now that the storm has passed.
836 medical transfers have come to San Antonio, many of them from Houston's Ben Taub Hospital, which was largely evacuated at the height of the storm. Those people are being taken care of in shelters or in local hospitals by doctors, nurses, and other volunteer medical personnel.
The City says it is still 'standing by' for more evacuees from either the Houston or the Beaumont Port Arthur areas.The expectation that San Antonio would receive up to 10,000 evacuees eased when Houston officials decided to open the Toyota Center and NRG Stadium to house evacuees, in hopes that the evacuees would not have to face the additional trauma of having to be bused to far off cities to wait out the storm.
CPS Energy today is dispatching a crew to Schulenberg, and from there they will deploy to areas across south Texas, especially in the coastal bend, to help restore electric power.53 CPS Energy personnel will be making the trip.
Tropical Storm Harvey came ashore for a second time this morning near Cameron Louisiana, taking pressure off of Houston, where the rain has stopped, but causing major problems in the Port Arthur area, where widespread evacuations have been ordered.
Harvey is expected to continue moving northeastward through Louisiana and into Mississippi and Tennessee.
Houston should be completely out of the rain zone by midday today.In Houston, officials say 13,000 people have been rescued from flooded cars and buildings. The official death toll in the Houston area stands at 18, but that is certain to rise as more bodies are found in flooded homes, cars, and buildings.
About one third of Harris County, an area the size of Washington DC, remains underwater today.
