Vacant Home Badly Damaged by Fire, Vagrant 'Squatters' Suspected

Once again, the growing problem of 'squatters' living in abandoned homes is suspected in a suspicious fire that badly damaged an empty home on the city's northeast side early today, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

By the time firefighters arrived at the house on Constitution Street, which is near I-35 and O'Connor, the home had been badly damaged by flames.

The house was unoccupied, and all of the utilities were turned off.  Arson investigators are looking into the cause.

This is the third empty home in San Antonio in the past month that has been destroyed in a suspicious fire.

Last month, former District 10 City Councilman Mike Gallagher issued a warning in his district newsletter that 'squatters' were taking up residence in empty homes on the northeast side.
