One of the jobs which is routinely listed as among the least likely to be replaced by automation or moved overseas in the coming several decades is chef, and now San Antonio ISD students will have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of this solid career, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The Culinary Institute of America, which has a campus at the Pearl Complex, will begin offering courses at several SAISD high schools, starting this fall at Lanier High School.
Superintendent Dr. Pedro Martinez says the program will allow students to get a feel for what is required to be successful in this field."We will be adopting the CIA curriculum, so you can be confident that what you're learning has the rigor of the CIA curriculum," he said.
Eventually, special CIA programs will be established at Brackenridge, Sam Houston and Lanier High Schools, all taught by teachers who have been certified by the CIA.
"The new partnership presents an invaluable opportunity for SAISD students," CIA President Dr. Tim Ryan said. "The collaboration between the CIA and SAISD opens the door for them to succeed on the college level and pursue their higher education goals right here in San Antonio. The vibrant food scene in San Antonio will also benefit from the enhanded talent pool including these young culinarians."
Prominent local chefs like Johnny Hernandez and Andrew Weissman have trained at the CIA.
Scholarship money will also be avaialble for SAISD students who go on to graduate from the Culinary Institute.
