Mayor Requests State Disaster Declaration Following Tornadoes

Mayor Ivy Taylor today asked Gov. Greg Abbott to declare San Antonio a state disaster area, 1200 WOAI reports.  She says that will speed the emergency aid to the areas hit hard by the four tornadoes that hit Monday night.

"Those directives include individual assistance in the form of grants and small business loans that can be used to replacement of uninsured costs as we conduct a more detailed damage assessment in the community," the Mayor said.

Several City officials provided an update today on the status of the cleanup from the storms, which damaged some 150 homes, and destroyed several.

Felicity Etheridge of CPS Energy says of the nearly 50,000 customers who were without power right after the storms, all but a few hundred now have their lights back on.

"We are focusing today on Olmos and Exeter, and we expect restoration of those customers who can be restored to be restored by midnight tonight," she said.

Etheridge says she is proud of the energy displayed by CPS Energy workers during the last 48 hours.

"So far, we have replaced 59 poles, 140 transformers, and 150 incidences of wires down and replacing those," she said.
