Texas Motorcyclists Lobbying State Legislature for Right to Drive on Center Line in Congested Traffic

In several states, including California, motorcyclists can beat highway congestion by driving on the center line of an expressway, between the lines of vehicles slowed by heavy traffic.

Now, 1200 WOAI news reports, motorcyclists have rallied at the State Capitol to push for a similar law in Texas.

"It would allow a motorcycle with air cooled engines to proceed in between the traffic," Mel Robbins of the Sons of Liberty Motorcycle Club told the rally.  "The motorcycles could travel at no more than five miles an hour above the speed the cars are going."

The bill is introduced by State Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin).

The motorcycle groups also called for legislation that prevents bikers from being being 'profiled' by police.

Robbins cited a motorcyclist  who was recently pulled over by Austin Police for a minor turn signal violation.

"Taking pictures of any tattoo that was on his body, including making him lift his shirt up on a public street, and threatening him that if he didn't cooperate he was going to go to jail," he said.  "That is profiling."

Robbins says there are 455,000 registered motorcyclists in the State of Texas.

"That is a very significant voting bloc," he said.
