Siclovia 2011 Event 10/2/2011 http://www.siclovia.org
This populated event took place today from 10 am - 2pm, shutting down all vehicular traffic on Broadway, from McCullough to the Witte Museum. Walkers, runners, skateboarders, dogs and cyclists, got the first opportunity to take over the road, and thousands came. It engaged local residents in safe recreation, active transportation, and healthy lifestyles. It was great to see entire families enjoying a safe walk or ride, and the Reclovia's along the way were great stops to participate in sports, dance, games, bike rentals, drink, healthy food and most of all physical interaction! The only time you see the northern parts of Broadway with no cars or buses. No Fumes either! Except for the golf carts, and an occassional motorized cycle. The weather couldn't of been better to breath it all in. The kids and dogs along the way made for great photos. (see Flickr link for the entire set) I think everyone wanted the event to go on past 2pm. Its nice to take back your city streets, and see your citizens right along side you!
Volunteers, City of San Antonio, Police, Fire, EMS and the Siclovia Organizers did a great job keeping the road safe and getting everyone out on the streets to play!
Our Local City Mayor was seen casually walking the route, he stopped to say hello to folks too. The SAPD started clearing the streets of people around 2:30pm and many still stayed on the sidewalks, local parks, and eateries along the route and up the River.
I hope the next Siclovia blossoms to include more stations, vendors, people and participation! Way to go San Antonio!
