1950 Memories from Austin

In 1950 my aunt who lived in San Antonio invited us to see their new television.  Three days later my father brought home a 7" tabletop television and all the equipment to erect a really, really tall television antenna.  The box was huge.  All the neighbors came to see us fire it up as we were the first in our area in Austin to have a television.  We had to sit 1 foot back for each 1" of screen size.  The screen proved to be too small so a few weeks later he came home with a 10" model, which pushed us kids 3 feet further away.

It was an exciting time for us from Uncle Miltie and Sid Caesar to Texaco Star and Old Gold cigarette commercials.  For this, WOAI has always had a soft spot in my heart.
