SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Scorpions extended their winning streak to four games with a 2-0 victory over FC Edmonton Saturday before an announced crowd of 8,310 at Heroes Stadium.
Jonathan Greenfield scored one goal and assisted on another from Ryan Cochrane, whose 75th minute goal was his first of the season.
The Scorpions will take a break from NASL action to face the Laredo Heat in the Second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Blossom Athletic Center. The winner of that match will take on the Houston Dynamo on Tuesday, May 29, 2012.
They will return to NASL play on May 27 when they travel to FC Edmonton.
“Winning breeds winning,” head coach Tim Hankinson said. “I thought our possession picked up in the second half. Hats off to Jonathan (Greenfield) for stepping in and making big plays.”
The first half began with the Scorpions in possession, but it was the Eddies who had first rights at the goal when Shaun Saiko sent a shot wide of the goal in the 13th minute.
The Scorpions and Eddies traded the ball back and forth for much of the first half and San Antonio went on the attack several times in the early stages, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
That was until the 40th minute, when Pablo Campos was awarded a penalty kick on contact in the box.
Jonathan Greenfield stepped up to the penalty spot and fired the ball hard and low in the left corner of the goal to give the Scorpions a 1-0 lead that they took into the halftime break.
The second half was a little more up-tempo than the first as the Eddies tried desperately to find a chance at goal, but the Scorpions’ staunch defense prevented many quality opportunities for the opposing side.
Cochrane added another Scorpion goal in the 75th minute when he headed a Greenfield free kick past Eddies goalkeeper John Smits into the back of the net.
That goal marked the end of the scoring but the Scorpions continued to fire volleys at the goal trying to add to the margin of victory as the minutes waned.
