SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The Texas Rangers are going to defend the Alamo.

The 20-year-old Alamodome, which has hosted NFL games, the NCAA Final Four and the NBA Finals, will host baseball for the first time when the Rangers and San Diego Padres play two exhibition games March 29-30.

Rangers President Nolan Ryan says the team is excited.

San Antonio is home to the Padres' Double-A affiliate, the Missions.  To prepare the Alamodome for baseball, AstroTurf will build a 133,000 square-foot custom field.

The right-field pole will be only 280 feet from home plate, and there will be a 16-foot-high wall in right. It will be 395 feet to straightaway center and 340 feet to the left-field corner, where there will be a 4-foot-high wall. Seating capacity will be 52,295.

San Antonio Big League Weekend was created through a partnership with Nolan Ryan, the Texas Rangers, the San Antonio Missions, Ryan-Sanders Baseball and the City of San Antonio. The initial concept of Big League Weekend is to bring the excitement and thrill of Major League Baseball to one of the country’s most popular vacation destinations, San Antonio. In its inaugural year, Big League Weekend will feature the 2010-11 American League Champion Texas Rangers vs. the San Diego Padres in the first-ever baseball games in the Alamodome.

Although this will be the first time for baseball inside the dome, the facility already benefits from a wealth of experience hosting major conventions and sporting events, including Big 12 Football Championships, the Alamo Bowl, NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Fours as well as the NBA Finals and the NBA All-Star Game.

Ryan-Sanders Baseball and Alamodome officials have worked with AstroTurf, the official Synthetic Turf of Major League Baseball, to design a one-of-a-kind custom field for the Alamodome.
