DALLAS (AP) - Former NFL wide receiver Sam Hurd's attorney says he is close to pleading guilty in a drug distribution case.

Documents filed Tuesday say Hurd will plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine. The charge carries a sentence of 10 years in prison to life.

But attorney Jay Ethington tells The Associated Press that any announcement of a plea is premature.

Ethington says he is still negotiating a final plea, including which allegations Hurd would acknowledge in an eventual deal.

Hurd allegedly said he wanted to buy five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana weekly to distribute in the Chicago area.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office did not immediately respond to an email.
