San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - The University of Incarnate Word football team will play five of its future Southland Conference opponents this year while it transitions to the FCS level with an 11-game schedule.
The Cardinals, moving up from Division II, will not play a full Southland schedule until 2014.
This season, UIW will pay visits to Southland members Central Arkansas (Aug. 29), Sam Houston State (Sept. 21) and Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 5). The Cardinals also will play the other new Southland members, Houston Baptist (Oct. 26) at home, and Abilene Christian in a home-and-away series, first in Abilene on Oct. 19 and then at UIW on Nov. 9.
The Cardinals finished with a 2-9 record last season.
