Recap: South Alabama vs. Monmouth
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Jesse Steele made three foul shots with 1.3 seconds remaining to give the Monmouth Hawks a 73-71 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
Steele ended with 11 points, eight assists and four steals for the Hawks (2-3), who snapped a three-game skid. Andrew Nicholas and Marcus Ware added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Augustine Rubit had 20 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks for the Jaguars (2-2), who have lost two in a row. Xavier Roberson and Mychal Ammons donated 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Trailing by four, 70-66, with 1:18 to play, Rubit recorded a three-point play to get South Alabama within one.
The Jaguars had a chance to go in front after Steele missed a jumper. Rubit grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds and was fouled. He made two foul shots to give South Alabama a 71-70 lead with six seconds left.
Steele was fouled from beyond the arc and made the following three free throws to make it 73-71.
