CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) -- The Marine Corps has identified a 22-year-old Marine from Central Texas killed in hostile action in Afghanistan.

A Marine Corps statement issued Monday says Lance Cpl. Shawn P. Hefner of Hico (HYE'-koh), Texas, died while part of a crew of an amphibious assault vehicle. The deadly clash happened Friday in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. Keith Milks, a Camp Lejeune spokesman, said the Marine Corps wasn't releasing any other details.

According to the statement, Hefner was assigned to Company D, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade from Camp Lejeune, N.C. He had joined the Marine Corps in January 2008, had deployed to Afghanistan last June and had just been promoted to lance corporal on Nov. 1.
