BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A 74-year-old retired Marine rarely misses a chance to extend his hand and offer thanks to military personnel returning home or departing.

Jerry Mundy thanks the troops during their layovers at the nation's easternmost major airport -- in Bangor, Maine. It's a refueling hub for military transports.

Mundy is showcased in a documentary to be shown tonight on PBS -- on this Veterans Day -- called "The Way We Get By."

About 30 greeters cheered and clapped yesterday as nearly 300 soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Calvary Division, arrived in Maine for a refueling layover. The troops were heading home to Fort Hood, Texas.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport also has a troop-greeting program.
