AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Former Houston Mayor Bill White has won the Democratic nomination for Texas governor, outpacing six challengers and giving his party its best hope in years to take back the office.

White had nearly 76 percent of the vote with a handful of precincts reporting to defeat wealthy Houston hair-care magnate Farouk Shami and five other lesser-known candidates during Tuesday's primary election.

White also is a well-funded businessman who made a name for himself during his city's response to the Hurricane Katrina evacuation.

White will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election. Gov. Rick Perry, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and GOP activist Debra Medina are vying for that nomination in a hard-hitting primary that has overshadowed the Democratic race.

I know we have some bad republicans but I certainly do not want a democratic Governor. I see how well they are running things in DC and DO NOT want that in TEXAS.

Who in the world could not have won against Farouk Shami. Farouk was an absolute embarrassment to the Texas Democratic party but who isn't?

Congrats Rick Perry for a 3rd Term!

Sorry Bill. I will support you, but this is Texas. The good ol boys (like my politically polar opposite husband) are in charge.

Haha, if the challenge is to vote out 'self-righteous morons', then Texas doesn't stand a chance because White can't be excluded from that category. Do some reading on houstonchronicledotcom to see what a majority of Houstonians think of White performance as mayor.

I found it interesting today while White was interviewed on KTSA. All of those that voted in the republican primary and the independent voters, bet you did not know that we are not TEXANS. White stated that 75 percent of TEXANS voted for him, not democrats, republicans or other, but 75% of the Texans. Imagine my surprise.

Perry is an idiot....Hopefully White has a chance. Anyone is better than that self-righteous moron.

I agree twister. I thought there was a slim possibility that this country would elect someone with ZERO experience beating out a national hero with 25 years of experience. No reason why a Dumo can't beat a proven Repub. Ok, ok, I was just BSing....White is going to take a beating. He is going to be made a example of and a message to Washington......"No More BS!"

More than likely Perry's an Idiot.
