DALLAS (AP) -- Labor leader Linda Chavez-Thompson is ahead of former Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle in early returns for the Democratic nomination in the Texas lieutenant governor's race.

The primary winner will oppose Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the November election.

In the Democratic primary for agriculture commissioner, humorist Kinky Friedman trailed rancher Hank Gilbert in early returns Tuesday night. The winner will take on Republican incumbent Todd Staples.

Democrats in Texas have been shut out of every statewide office since 1994.

On the Republican side, accountant David Porter was leading incumbent Victor Carrillo for a seat on the three-member Texas Railroad Commission.

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas voters made their way to the polls Tuesday to decide who will represent the Democrats and the Republican in the November election.

Perhaps the most hard-fought race was the race between Republican gubernatorial candidates Governor Rick Perry, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Huthchison, and party activist Debra Medina. While many have predicted Perry or Hutchison will win the race, some say Medina could pull in enough votes to force an April runoff between the top two finishers.

Another race to watch in Texas is for eight seats on the Texas Board of Education. Associated Press reports that board members' "decisions about curriculum standards in Texas have significant impact on the content of textbooks marketed nationwide." The election is also the first since the board tacked the subject of evolution. CLICK HERE to read more about this race.

There are also 14 Texas congressmen who have challengers from their own party and many more state and local races. CLICK HERE for a list of the races.

Way to go Kay Bailey!!!!! I wonder if she will like like she did 16 years ago when she said she would run for one turn and then go home. Then she said that she would vot to keep the health care bill from coming to a vote. Now she said she will resign from the Senate - win or lose. Bet she lied there too.

I almost always vote Republican, but this time I'm voting for Democratic for White. I can't believe people actually voted for Perry who wanted schoolgirls inoculated for cervical cancer with an untried drug (he has ties to Merck), who tried to sell the state lottery, and who consistently is for toll roads. ANYONE IS BETTER THAN PERRY.

What are people thinking? We cannot have another term with Rick Perry. TAX TAX TAX TAX, that is all that is going on here, attack a group, tax them and when that doesn't work out the way he/they thought, go after another group. Rid Texas of this crap....don't forget tollroads.
