SAN ANTONIO -- A couple from Eagle Pass is behind bars in San Antonio after police say they beat up a woman and tried to steal her car Sunday.
Investigators said one of the suspects, an 18-year-old woman, approached the victim in a parking lot near the Walmart store at Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches and asked if she could use the victim's cell phone. When victim said she didn't have one, the woman threw a tire iron, hitting the victim as she sat in her car. The woman then began beating the victim and tried to get her out of the vehicle. A 21-year-old man who was with the woman then approached, pulled the victim from her car, threw her to the ground, and then forced her into the trunk of her car. The woman jumped into the driver's seat of the victim's car and drove off, with the man following in a truck. Police say that victim's quick thinking helped her escape.
"The complainant acted quickly and found the trunk release in her, inside her vehicle, the little cord, was able to pull it, open it up, and then she leaped out," explained Sgt. Daniel Alonzo of the San Antonio Police Department.
The victim was taken to North Central Baptist Hospital with head injuries, broken ribs, and a broken wrist. She is expected to be all right.
The two suspects kept driving, but apparently abandoned the victim's car a short time later. Police located the car using the vehicle's OnStar system. Police then caught up with the two suspects in the truck a few miles away near Interstate 35 and Walzem. They are now being held on aggravated robbery and unlawful restraint charges. Police said they also discovered the truck the couple was traveling in had been stolen in a similar incident near Blanco and Woodlawn on Thursday, August 5th.
