You sit down to eat dinner, and you get a phone call claiming your car warranty has expired and this is your last chance to renew. But, it's not true.

News 4 asked people on our website if they'd gotten a wave of auto warranty phone calls, and we received more than 50 emails in just a few hours.

The calls are relentless, coming in on your home phone, work phone, and even on your cell phone.

Sal Hernandez runs an advertising company and says he gets the calls and as many as 20 of them a day.

"It's very annoying. Because we're trying to run a business here and any phone call we get here could a potential client," Hernandez told News 4.

Hernandez also said the 'don't call me back option' they offer doesn't work. Plus, the call says, "This is our last attempt to contact you about your vehicle warranty." But it's not.

The Better Business Bureau says it's a national marketing blitz that is persistent and in some cases illegal.

"We are getting calls from a lot of people that are on the 'Do Not Call' list, and they are still getting calls. This is against federal law," said Dean Taylor of the Better Business Bureau. "Also, people are getting calls on their mobile phone."

That's also against the law. So what can you do about it?

You can hang up or screen your calls like Sal Hernandez. Or, you can try to talk to a real person and ask a few questions, such as what's the name of the company. But experts warn not to give out any personal information or agree to anything without seeing an agreement on paper.

The Better Business Bureau says if you do get a company name or a number on caller I.D., they'd like to know about it. You can call them at 210-828-9441.

Just got 2 more confirmations. A friend in Baton Rouge, LA and a friend in Dallas, TX are both being bombarded with the calls. This has grown into an epidemic.

I posted a comment on your website earlier expressing my concern. I feel just as outraged as oneluv0525. I received these calls several times a day at home and at least once per day on my cell and at work. These calls are costing me daytime minutes on my cell phone and lost time at work. Plus it appears that these telemarketers have access to personal information, I never list my cell number, the only way they could've gotten it is though the cellular company or my banking institution and that's scary. It concerns me that someone in these companies may be selling personally identifiable information (PII). I'm filing a complaint with the FCC. We'll see what happens. When I do a reverse lookup it identifies the caller but when I try to return the call, I get either a busy signal or a message that the number you have reached is no longer in service.

I fortunately haven't received any calls, but I do throw away a lot of paper sales pitches for extended warranties from my mailbox. Something about any such sales bombardment, either by phone or by mail, just screams "scam!". Surely, though, there are some legitimate ones out there somewhere. I hope the upcoming story identifies the real ones, if there actually are any. I bought my extended warranty through my dealership when I purchased my car. We all know how much of an upcharge dealerships tack onto everything. Is there a better way to purchase an extended warranty without getting burned?

I got one of these in the mail about a week after I purchased a 97 Firebird in a for-sale-by-owner sort of way. The only way they could even know that I purchased the car is if the tax/title office leaked the info out that I was the new owner. The car was already tagged as having been in an accident in the state of Florida so who would give me a warranty on that. I think someone needs to keep our info at the tax office a secret.

I get the calls probably about once a day while Im at work...the calls are for my boss, but Im the one who answers the phones and its extremely annoying. We get many calls from telemarketers, all trying to reach my boss, and they are getting extremely sneaky with it as well, and usually continue to call JUST in case he happens to pick up the phone. VERY annoying. Anywho, back on topic, my husband and I also receivedletters in the mail all the time saying the warranty is almost up. It is extremely annoying!
