NEW YORK (NBC News Channel) -- Online shoppers will head to the web in droves one week on Cyber Monday.
But beware of scammers who want to treat themselves to "your" hard-earned money. Brand protection firm Mark Monitor has some tips to thwart scammers.
- Be careful what you search for. Adding words like "cheap" or "discount" to your search more than doubles your chances of landing on a site offering counterfeit items.
- Be wary of highly-discounted products. If the deal seems too good to be true, it likely is.
- Run a search for the company plus the word "scam" and see what pops up.
