Yes, (sraspurs20 & phrilly) there are some people especially the elderly that don't know how to speak English. I guess you don't much about history and the fact that the Mexicans work the land for the gringos. When people are young and educated, it is easier to learn any languange, but when your poor and live in a region where spanish is spoken regularly you get by with what you can. This is especially with women because in those days, the men brought home the money. My grandmother didn't speak english because she work in the fields. By the way, my grandfather was German and was in the U.S. military. And in those days, you were a Mexican and not hispanic. Today if your educated, they call you Latino. What's so surprising these days, the kids don't know their own culture nor their own language. So don't judge people especially the elderly.. Thank God that your healthy and that you never get cancer..

'“She had certain people around her that let her down, too. Cause there could have been other people to reach out and notify somebody, other family members. But it didn’t happen, and I just can’t understand why,” says Tony.' Obviously you didn't read the story. Sometimes people have family that they might as well not have according to the care they provide to them. As for the English, no excuse, this woman has been here for years had years and should have learned the language of the country she was living in. There are many hispanics that just don't care to learn it no matter their age. This does a misservice to their children when they go to school. My sister was a teacher and often had to have the kids come in with the parents to translate. There is something seriously wrong with that picture. The first immegrants that came to our shore many years ago learned the language above all else because that was the language of the country they were in. I learned German when I was stationed in Germany even though I wasn't going to be there permanently. The US needs to vote in the official language. Every other country has.

The story does not mention if she has children?? She must not but that is part of the story and shold have been mentioned - My siblings and I supported both our parents the last five or so years they were alive - It was our reponsibility after all. Circle of life.

Thankfully something is in the works to help this poor woman. In regards to people questioning why she doesnt know English this is not uncommon at all. Many people dont and they get by since others speak the their language and their spouses take care of things that are in English. In the article above it did say her husband took care of everything until he passed. Its easy to fall behind on mortgage payments when youre bombarded with hospital bills, chemo drug bills, hospice bills as all these can be astronomical. Hope she can live the rest of days in peace and not stressed out about being evicted.

How does she pay for her medical care? If she's receiving government money she must be a citizen but if that's the case why doesn't she speak English? What does being hospitalized have to do with making the house payment? Nice that someone has stepped up to help her but her story doesn't jive.

Remember the term Force-Placed Insurance, because it's the cause of the majority of foreclosures since 1994. False placement of illegally and artificially inflated premiums have been proven to create a negative escrow account, which doubles mortgage payments, blocks property tax payments, and disqualifies you for a loan modification. A very sad story, but where are her children, siblings, nephews, grandchildren, etc? Why did they abandon her? Why is this the fault of the government? Why is this story trying to make me feel guilty as if was my fault? Why did she fail to learn English? Her family failed her, not the public or government

My mom didn't learn to speak English until in her twenties but it is easy enough to do when you live in the country that speaks the language, just have to practice by reading too. It is possible to learn when you are older. It is very nice of that anonymous donor, but I wonder if she has children, in Asian culture I know the children feel the duty to take care of the elders.
