HAGERSTOWN, Maryland (NBC News Channel) -- A new dashcam video illustrates how dangerous highways can become when motorists fail to obey a law know as "the move over law."

Maryland State Police released dashcam video of a traffic accident that seriously injured trooper David Avila during a routine traffic stop along Interstate 70 in June. Trooper Avila was struck by a tractor trailer driving to close to the shoulder that slammed into his patrol car.

The new law requires drivers to literally move over or slow down when they see first responders along the side of the road.

Trooper Avila is recovering from the accident with several serious injuries. But doctors say they aren't sure Avila will be able to move his right arm again or return to work.

I believe the law is move over or slow down. I get the point, golfnut, that this dude probably had no chance in hell to get over, He should have slowed.

Nothing, however, prevented the trucker from slowing down, dropping behind the car in the left lane and then moving over. From his elevated perch in the cab of the semi he would have been able to see the traffic stop ahead and slow down and move to the left.

look at the video close, you will see a car next the the 18 wheeler. the wheeler couldn't move over. i have seen a lot of cars, driving right up next to wheelers in their blind spots. the best thing to do is to speed up and pass these large monsters.
