SAN ANTONIO -- A woman is in critical condition after she is struck by a car at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, and the man behind the wheel could face criminal negligence charges.

"We had an elderly man come to the VA hospital for a medical appointment of some sort," said Sgt. Michael Oliva of the San Antonio Police Department.

Sgt. Oliva says the man drove up to the front entrance and valet parked. But he wasn't at the hospital long.

"I don't know if he got seen or not, and if anything else might have happened, but he ended up walking back outside with his wife," explained Sgt. Oliva.

Then the unthinkable happened.

"He accelerated, lost control of his vehicle, went around the little bend here at the hospital," Sgt. Oliva told us.

A hospital employee was hit by the entrance of the building. The 49-year-old woman suffered extensive injuries to her upper body.

"Once he hit the female," Sgt. Oliva said. "The vehicle ended up hitting a tree that's right in front of the hospital."

The victim was undergoing surgery at University Hospital Friday afternoon. Her condition is still critical.

The driver and his wife were checked out and are all right. Police are still questioning witnesses and are looking into whether a confrontation inside the hospital took place prior to the accident. The driver has not been arrested.

The Victim is NOT ok... She has been fighting every unimaginable complication since this horrendous incident ... Let's concentrate on HER right now, and pray for her family, the doctors and nurses that are working so diligently to save her life, and for God's presence in the middle of this...

I'm a vet. When i go for my visits it is extremely congested with cars, trucks, buses, and people at the entrance. Patients, visitors, and employees have to play "dodge-car". It was just an accident waiting to happen. I too have shown up to appointments that have been canceled yet never notified. I too have left frustrated by the responses and rude behavior by the people behind the desks when u arrive to a clinic. Most of the time they're on the phone, socializing, and make us veterans wait then respond rudely. I can understand why the vet was angry but it's still no excuse for what he did.

Bottom Line is this man was wrong. This employee did nothing to him. You can talk about judgement all day but the fact of the matter is this man could have killed an innocent person that did nothing to him. And i wish everyone quit using this cruch of he was a angry veteran. And how people dont treat them right. I am a veteran as well, but no one put a gun to my head and told me to sign up. I did cause i had a choice. Just like this MAN made the choice to get in the vehicle and act foolish. So Please stop using he's an angry Veteran It's a cruch. What we need to be worried about is this employee cause guess what most likely she was one too!!!!!!!

I am very sorry for the worker. I was there and saw when he and his wife got there. Question what happened inside? My husband and I have to deal with incompetant workers who dont let you know ahead of time your appt. was cancelled. They are rude and act like you are cattle or a number. They also are so concerned for adding a building for returning vets and give a small walkway to share with buses and drop offs and pickups and slow valet attendants. these vets are too denied help and their benefits they deserve and they just medicate them. Build a parking garage please !!!!!!

I'M a US veteran, so what??? Does being a veteran excuse someone for being a menace in a vehicle??? Maybe an old vet like myself will zone out and run YOU over someday......

People...none of you were there! I'm so tired of people judging other people! You weren't there! Put yourself in the victim's position, then put yourself in the driver's position. He is a US Veteran. He supported this country in a war, and did it because of what this country meant to him...FREEDOM. I don't think ANY soldier/vet serving today, yesterday or in the future will say, "I'm proud to support a country who allows FREE SPEECH so that we can all judge each other and let hate pour out of our mouths." Remember, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone..." Oh, and better call all your older friends and relatives and pray that he and his wife aren't related to you, because if they are...will you eat your words and will I see you on the news tomorrow trying to convince all the other "jumpers to conclusion" that they should not judge someone if they don't know the "whole" situation.-Me? Young, wife, mother, medical professional married to a combat veteran who both have cared for children, adults and geriatric patients, including veterans. Stop judging, start praying because you'll never know when your medical problems are going to jump out at you. Pray it's not while you're driving or crossing the street. God bless ALL involved because HE knows.

I use to work there. Sounds like he went in and demanded something he thought he deserved and they told him "I don't think so". So he stormed out of the hospital, got in his car and launched.....prayers for the employee. He should have been arrested.
