NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- A massive apartment fire in New Braunfels has left several families without a home.
Fire crews were called to the Linde Apartments off of IH-35 North around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday. Investigators said fire started inside a downstairs apartment.
"It's terrifying. It's terrifying. I don't know what to do," Monique Escobar told News 4 WOAI.
The 25-year-old mom said she is grateful her husband woke up after the fire started.
"He woke us up, and he literally, like, he just was like pushing me and, like, 'Wake up, wake up.' And I woke up," Escobar recalled. "And I couldn't see, and I could smell smoke, and I just grabbed my son."
Escobar was able to grab their 2-year-old boy and get out the front of the apartment. She and her husband were not able to save anything except themselves.
"My grandmother just died two weeks ago, and she had given me a china hutch and table, and that's gone," Escobar said. "And the only pictures that I had of her that was left."
The Red Cross is helping out all of the affected families by providing a place to stay for three days. Escobar said she hopes the 72 hours are enough time for she and her husband to get back on their feet again.
Five families were displaced by the fire. Two of those families lost everything, and most of them did not have renter's insurance.
Investigators say they fire started after food was left on the stove overnight in one of the apartments.
