SAN ANTONIO - A UTSA graduate student who was attacked by two chimpanzees at an animal sanctuary in South Africa has lost his ears, an arm and all of his toes in the attack.
Andrew Oberle, 26, underwent six more hours of surgery on Sunday. He also has extensive injuries to the skin on his remaining arm and legs.
Oberle was attacked by the chimps on Thursday at Camp Eden at the Jane Goodall Institute in Nelspruit, South Africa. He reportedly crossed into a no-go zone at the camp to prevent the chimpanzees from throwing rocks at tourists. The animals dragged him 30 yards into their enclosure and attacked him.
Oberle is in critical, but stable condition.
