SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA graduate student who was mauled by two chimpanzees in South Africa will be returning to the U.S. to continue his recovery.

Andrew Oberle will be staying at a hospital in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.

He is expected to be transferred there by next week. "I'm really happy he's coming back home, we're all dying to see him, " said Anthony Reimherr, Oberle's roommate.

Reimherr told News 4 WOAI the very thing Oberle may be missing the most is his rescue dog Angie. "So as soon as we get the chance we're going to take her up to St. Louis so she can see him, and he can see her, " said Reimherr.

The 26-year-old was leading a group of tourists at the Jane Goodall Institute back in June, when he was attacked.

Authorities say Oberle lost several fingers, and suffered head and other injuries.

Oberle's friends have created a Facebook page with updates on Oberle,  as well as fundraising information.
