CALCASIEU PARISH, Louisiana (NBC News Channel) -- Some Louisianans are upset after an American flag at a CITGO facility in the Lake Charles area was flown at half staff after the death of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez Tuesday.

The refinery is actually owned by the Venezuelan government. According to the U.S. Code Title 4, in the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half staff according to presidential instructions or orders.

CITGO released the following statement on the death of Chavez on Tuesday.

"President Hugo Chavez of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela leaves behind a legacy of support for the underprivileged and promotion of social justice that transcends geographical boundaries. We at CITGO Petroleum Corporation are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the people of Venezuela in this time of grief."

Chavez was best known in the U.S. for implementing a wide-range of socialist reforms in his country and for his hostility toward the foreign affairs of the U.S. At one point, he publicly referred to former president George W. Bush as "el diablo," or "the devil."

See how poor Chavez kept his people? Even their communist gas stations can't afford their Venezuelan flags!

"Chavez ... leaves behind a legacy of support for the underprivileged and promotion of social justice...". No, his legacy is one of confiscating property and using it to pay off a permanent dependent underclass in exchange for their votes while relieving them of any expectation that they do anything to lift themselves out of poverty by work and personal effort, lest they no longer be dependent. Like every socialist Chavez promotes government dependency and was himself dependent upon it for his political power to push statism not to mention provide the opportunity to extravagantly feather his own nest at public expense. Which is what socialists in this country are busily emulating.

It is a very fine line that corporate powers walk - whether to anger customers or to anger their boss and give up a promotion. In this case the corporate powers decided to anger the customers. I would say that it is laudable but I wonder what would that banana republic do if the roles were reversed. I have a feeling that they would demand their flag be at full staff and point out the boundaries end at the shoreline.

Quite buying Citgo products, "PERIOD". "Dictators" are wonderful in the socialist world. Lets see what happens when people are fed up with CITGO.

It's unfortunate that flying the flag at half mast lost alot of its credibility when it was done for Whitney Houston. Veterans should be outraged the the flying of this flag was not ordered by the prez (as it's supposed to be) but rather by the individuals of the building, taking it upon themselves to turn a show of respect from the American people and turning it into a miserbale fail.
