NO excuse! Children, elderly, disabled and animals are just not inadvertently left in a vehicle? This is the first time I have ever done this. Is that all one has to say after being directly responsible for death? RESPONSIBILITY is huge when it comes to taking care of children, elderly, disabled and animals. That includes not causing death by INADVERTENTLY leaving them in danger.

To those stating that this does not qualify as a crime, if it was a regular citizen who did this to two K9's, they would be charged with a crime. At the very least, Deputy Benoy needs to be fired! Mistake?! These were two K9 police officers, there is NO EXCUSE for this. Deputy Benoy cannot be trusted with the job that he has after this incident. He had so little care and thought to his fellow officers/partners that due to his actions he killed them. They would have given their lives for him and because of him, they suffered horrifically to their deaths. Deputy Benoy cannot come back from this. He must be fired. NO EXCUSES.

I've come to a conclusion that the K9 Officers death is somewhat the Handlers fault for not asking questions about the safety for his partners, but the BLAME SHOULD GO SQUARELY ON SHERIFF ORTIZ!!!! The "Sheriff" and his office had the equipment to protect the K9s from this type of situation because of an identical incident that happened in 2010, but it was placed upon its inventory shelves to collect dust for TWO YEARS. Instead, during the Sheriffs debates, all he was “Proud of” was that he helped bring in a Parking garage and for the Trains not to blow its horns around the Sheriffs Dept so it can be a “Quit Zone”. THAT’S WHAT HE’S IN THE FOUR YEARS IN OFFICE!?!? This is one of the many PREDICAMENTS that this so called "SHERIFF" has put on the BCSO and its Officers. Voting is on the 31st and I want ORTIZ out!!!! YOU SHOULD TOO

if he loved those dogs so much he wouldn't have just "forgot" about them. i don't FORGET about my pups and them needing food and water and a/c. he's an idiot and doesn't deserve to have another responsibility like this ever again

One thing that I do find puzzling about all this is where was the car parked? Was it in BCSO parking lot? Did no one walk by the car or, even at a distance, see the dogs in the car? Just how observant are our deputies and civilian employees at the Sheriff's Office and jail?

210bro - I am far from a Bible thumper but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain good advice. I see you are one of those people who has never done anything bad, and your life has been perfect. pfffff Dogman - I guess the same goes for you. I am glad you have dedicated your life to a noble calling, and I am sure their are some officers who have had some good K-9 parteners that you have trained. Having said all that I will tell you that you need to study up on mens rea and read about criminal intent in the Texas Penal Code. It is likely that the officer will be punished and he may even be fired. The problem with charging somebody with a crime is that the actor need to meet all of the elements of that praticular crime.
