SAN ANTONIO -- Police arrested two men allegedly poaching deer in the Medical Center Friday morning.
Game Warden Johnny Jones said the men shot and killed an 11-point buck with a bow and arrow. San Antonio Police officers used a helicopter to locate the two men, who were allegedly illegally hunting in a wooded area near Floyd Curl and Hamilton Wolfe. A University of Texas Health Science Center Police officer had spotted their vehicle parked in a lot and the pair was eventually taken into custody before 5:00 a.m.
Jones said poachers are a problem in that area, which has a lot of deer and a walking and jogging trail, which is closed at night.
"It's a very big deal. You've got people shooting a rifle or a bow and you never know when you might hit somebody on the other side," Jones said.
The men are facing three charges each, including hunting without landowner consent, hunting at night and hunting with a light. All are Class A misdemeanors and if convicted, the men could have to spend up to two years in jail and pay up to a $4,000 fine. They could also have to give up their hunting licenses and equipment, like their bow and arrows.
Jones said if you spot poachers, you can call Operation Game Thief to report them at (800) 792-4263. You could get up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a poacher.
