According to the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, emergency crews received a 9-1-1 call just before 11:00 a.m. The caller said there had been a "high pressure accident" at the electrical power plant in the 5000 block of Weil Road at Creek Road. The plant is owned by
P.S.E.G.A spokesperson for P.S.E.G. stated crews were doing maintenance work on a generator while a pressure test was being done. That's when a manway, or small door, blew off, after the compressed air inside was released, striking two contract workers employed by
Sulzer Ltd. One of the men was hit in the chest. He was taken by AirLife to University Hospital in San Antonio. The other man suffered lacerations to his face. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital. The P.S.E.G. spokesperson said both men were conscious and able to move their limbs.
A News 4 WOAI investigation found that P.S.E.G., a New Jersey-based company that owns the Marion power plant, was cited by the U.S. Department of Labor for some serious violations.
In 2005, an employee was killed when he fell from a bucket truck. And this summer, the company was fined more than $7,000 for violating policies on medical services, first aid, and failing to provide adequate eye and face protection for workers.
