SAN ANTONIO -- Two families are devastated after a deadly crash in which a 6-year-old was hit and killed by a teenager who police say was both drunk and distracted.
Brandon Abrams was riding his bike on a sidewalk on Autumn Sunrise when police say 17-year-old Luis Enrique Landin lost control of his truck and hit him. Landin allegedly told police he lost control after he dropped his cell phone and reached out to pick it up. He is now charged with intoxication manslaughter.
People have already set up a memorial for Brandon near the site of the accident, and a vigil will be held here Friday evening.
News 4's Kristina De Leon spoke with Brandon's grief-stricken mother about her loss.
"I just think that it's sweet that everyone has come to pay their respects to Brandon," said Nadia Abrams. "He would like that. He was such a sweet boy."
Still in her pajamas from last night, Nadia Abrams clings to one of her son Brandon's shirt. She made her way outside to look at the memorial built in the 6-year old's honor.
"He always wanted to just be outside. He always wanted to play," Nadia told us as she cried. "We were working on homework. The ice cream truck went by. I just was going to let him out long enough to get some ice cream."
Police say that's when the first grader was hit, riding on the sidewalk waiting for the ice cream truck.
All morning long, neighbors came to pay their respects, leaving stuffed animals, or making donations for the funeral expenses.
"They're my family around here, my neighbor," said Roger Pedro. "So yeah. God bless them. I wish them the best."
"We stopped here, neighbor Sandra Cotner told us. "And we prayed for him and for his family."
A family that is devastated by the loss of a young boy who was loved by so many.
"It's just so hard for me right now," explained Nadia Abrams "Because I just want him to come home. I just keep expecting him to come through the door."
