SAN ANTONIO -- An estimated 140 roosters that were forced to fight each other are now being cared for at Animal Care Services. Bexar County Sheriff's Deputies busted the illegal cockfighting ring in Southeast Bexar County. Twenty roosters were found dead. Investigators say 74 people were cited for illegal gambling, while 26 others ran off, leaving their cars behind.
More than $41,000 was seized in the bust. Sheriff's officials say when the investigation is complete they expect to arrest 15 to 20 people on charges of cruelty to animals, illegal cockfighting, and illegal gambling.
