SAN ANTONIO -- People who remember the tragedy and strangers alike stopped by a booth inside the Henry B.Gonzalez Convention Center to drop off donations for the Jorge Fernandez Scholarship Fund.

Cyndi Mendez started the fund in memory of her fiancé, who collapsed and died after running in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon last year.

"He was such an amazing person, that I think that everybody need to know who he was," explained Mendez.

Mendez told us her fiancé was healthy and very athletic. She still has a hard time trying understand how he died. Last year, they started the race together. He finished seconds behind her. Sadly, Cyndi wasn't aware Jorge had been rushed to the hospital, until much later.

"Trying to turn a tragedy into something beautiful," Mendez told us.

Jorge was a nurse, and he wanted to continue his education. The scholarship fund will help San Antonio high school students wanting to pursue a medical career. So far, "Team Jorge" has raised more than $10,000 and even after the marathon, anyone can still donate.
