KIRBY, Texas -- A train derailment in Kirby kept crews busy early Thursday morning.

The derailment happened off FM Road 78 before 1:30 a.m. Thursday. News 4 WOAI was told a Union Pacific train car toppled over at a refueling depot.

The accident blocked the tracks for several hours. Since it was confined to the depot, no traffic in the area was affected.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the train to go off the tracks.

TOXIC TRAIN SAFETY - A First Responders Petition caused The Chlorine Institute to conduct a five-month study comparing the safety of secondary containment to the chlorine “C”-Kit for chlorine tank cars. The study proved secondary containment to be, by far, the safest technology for containing and preventing releases of chlorine gas. To see secondary containment - search “CHLORTANKER.”
