BEXAR COUNTY, Texas --Firefighters in east Bexar County worked for hours to put out a hay fire Thursday morning.
The fire started on a trailer carrying hay near the intersection of I-10 and F.M. 1518 just after 8:00 a.m.
News 4 WOAI was told a driver was pulling his trailer down Abbot Lane when the trailer fender collapsed, which created a spark and caught the hay on fire.
"Right now just one spark, as dry as it is, just one spark will set the grass on fire." Firefighter Albert Strzelczyk says.
What makes matters worse, hay is harder to come by in a drought. The 10 bales that caught fire during the accident were worth $700.00. Firefighters spent hours separating the hay and putting the bales out one by one.
In the dry conditions we are experiencing, firefighters warn that people have to be extra careful with any fire outdoors, whether it's a BBQ, fireworks this 4th of July weekend, or even a cigarette. Firefighters say if you smoke in your car, do not throw your cigarette butt out the window when you're done.
