NEW YORK (NBC News Channel) -- Even the tooth fairy is feeling the effects of inflation, according to a survey out Tuesday.

The VISA survey finds that kids received an average of $3.00 per tooth under their pillows this year, up 15 percent from 2011. Some received as much as $20.00 a pop, making it a good time to be losing baby teeth.

VISA plans to launch an iPhone and iPad app to help parents calculate the going rate for tooth fairy visits.

The app is meant to encourage fiscal responsibility, but some financial gurus are concerned that it will encourage parents to try to top each other.
