SAN ANTONIO - A toddler has died after being hit by a car in the
San Antonio Military Medical Center parking lot Wednesday morning.
The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. SAMMC officials say the mom and her 17-month-old son were crossing a parking lot in a cross walk when an 86-year-old driver crashed his car right into them.
“The elderly gentleman was coming through the parking lot at the time, and he either didn't see or the conditions didn't allow him to react quickly enough, and hit the child in the stroller,” explained Brent Boller, Director of Public Affairs Joint Military.
Officials say the car then kept going. It struck a parked SUV and came to rest partially underneath a portable building.
“Some of the eyewitnesses indicated it was probably a little faster than what you would normally want to travel in a parking lot,” Boller said, referring to the speed of the man's car.
The little boy was taken to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead. Officials say the boy’s mother was uninjured. The elderly driver was admitted to SAMMC and is in guarded condition.
It's not known what caused the elderly driver to lose control of his car, but Boller said the crash appears to be accidental.
