SAN ANTONIO - A toddler has died after being hit by a car in the San Antonio Military Medical Center parking lot Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. SAMMC officials say the mom and her 17-month-old son were crossing a parking lot in a cross walk when an 86-year-old driver crashed his car right into them.

“The elderly gentleman was coming through the parking lot at the time, and he either didn't see or the conditions didn't allow him to react quickly enough, and hit the child in the stroller,” explained Brent Boller, Director of Public Affairs Joint Military.

Officials say the car then kept going. It struck a parked SUV and came to rest partially underneath a portable building.

“Some of the eyewitnesses indicated it was probably a little faster than what you would normally want to travel in a parking lot,” Boller said, referring to the speed of the man's car.

The little boy was taken to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead. Officials say the boy’s mother was uninjured. The elderly driver was admitted to SAMMC and is in guarded condition.

It's not known what caused the elderly driver to lose control of his car, but Boller said the crash appears to be accidental.

Sadly there are so many judgemental people in this world. Let's not forget that two lives where lost as a result of this tragedy. My prayers go out to both families. Young people, as well as the elderly have health issues some they may know or may not know about. I suffer from terrible migraines....when I'm about to have one I lose total vision, so my question is for the person who said the "old geezer should take VIA" does that mean I should stop driving as well? How many of you are so damn opinionated from reading this short article without receiving the full facts! Many of you drivers, I see out there...speed through parking lots, speed in school zones, neighborhoods, don't stop for school buses, yeild to pedestrians, talk on the cell phone while driving, drive under the influence of alcohol/medications....so is anybody really innocent here? I'll tell you who these comments should be directed to! It's the young mother that saw her baby killed right in front of her or his 5 year old sister who keeps asking for her brother because she was there and saw her brother killed. Comments should be of empathy and sympathy at this time. I came home crying today because I had to hold this mother in my arms because she couldn't keep it together....people need to be there for this young soldier now!

Just started reading the comments and saw hanover's. Wow that is sad may he and the little boy rest in peace. Before you get on here calling people ignorant think about this...... everyone is commenting on the story that was reported and that was not reported in the story. So you want everyone to wait for an update or follow up story before they say anything? If we did that we would never comment on any stories seeing as WOAI almost never has follow up stories. Lets just get rid of the comment section all together

I hate to sound mean but once you hit a certain age you need to be tested again to make sure that you are still able to drive. My best friend was T boned because an elderly man did not see the stop sign and ran right through it. Sad part is he lived right around the corner and had never seen it. My heart goes out to this mother....I can’t even imagine how she feels. Hopefully they take this mans License away because if you hit someone and then don’t even realize it and keep going you are not capable of driving a car safely.

To all the ignorant commentators: The elderly gentleman died last night. He had a heart attack while driving the car. You people that speculate, and pontificate should hold off on commenting before all the facts are given. Then maybe you wouldn't look like fools.

@canaandog, tell your father that driving is not a right; it is a privilege. You have time to do something about your father before he kills someone on the road. @halfpint, you wrote that no one was being careless. If the only thing stopping your vehicle is running into a building, I would say the driver was very careless! @Mary, people are just angry that this baby was killed for nothing. I think underneath everyone's anger is compassion.

If not renewing their licenses annually, there should be some sort of standard hand/eye coordination test that can be administered at separate locations, results tie in with DMV computers. If you fliunk, you hnad over your license. Going to the DMV yearly for this would kill ANYONE. I could die in line and I am nowhere NEAR elderly...
