SAN ANTONIO – A toddler is found alone wandering a San Antonio street late Wednesday night. Police say the 3-year-old and his 1-year-old brother were left alone at a house while their babysitter went for a beer run.
Police tell News 4 WOAI the boys were staying at a house just north of downtown with their grandfather’s ex-girlfriend. Apparently, she went out late Wednesday night and left the boys with a 50-year-old man. Police say he abandoned the two kids, leaving them at the house while he went to buy beer. That’s when the 3-year-old wandered outside the home, police say.
The boy was found and rescued by a passerby. A woman and her two daughters were driving on the 1000 block of Fresno Street around 11 p.m. when they saw the little boy cross the street. They tell News 4 WOAI they stopped to help since they did not see any adults with the boy.
"We just saw him crossing the street so we started honking. He came up to us, opened the door and came into car. Then we waited, started honking and called police," said Belem Almaraz.
Police arrived and tracked down the man who was supposed to be babysitting the two boys. Officers say he was drunk and belligerent. They arrested and charged him with public intoxication.
Police tell News 4 WOAI they also tried charging the man with endangering a child. However, a judge rejected the charge, claiming there was no proof the man was responsible for the children.
The two boys were found unharmed. They are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
