SAN ANTONIO -- One of San Antonio's best-known preachers was laid to rest Tuesday.

An iconic pastor, Reverend E. Thurman Walker died of cancer more than a week ago.

"He was more concerned about the lives and welfare of other people and especially in this community," said former San Antonio Spur and Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson.

Johnson was just one of hundreds who packed Antioch Baptist Church Monday and who can attest to the impact Pastor Walker had on the East Side and throughout San Antonio.

An overflow of people could be seen outside.

"It's more than just a pastor and member relationship," said Velma Kemp. "Pastor Walker is family."

Pastor Walker was a 'family member' who changed the face of his community, building a sports complex and community center, a school, and an association of churches over recent years.

"He's opened up the church, not just for the church, but also for the community of the children in the neighborhood," explained Dr. Loren Alves.

"To see that he has passed on, that he has such a wonderful spirit while he was here, and he did so much for this community," Anthony Edwards told News 4 WOAI.

That community came together to tell their friend goodbye.

"You're talking about a man that meant so much to so many," added Avery Johnson. "And, I'm just glad to be here to celebrate his life."

Pastor Walker may be gone, but friends and family say everything he did for his community will live on forever.
