ST. HEDWIG, Texas - A homeowner is relieved a company will replace the items thieves took from her mailbox and she is concerned for neighbors who have also become victims in her rural community.

She said someone drove down her road. She thought it was the mail carrier because they don’t drive the typical trucks you might see. Turns out, thieves swiped her mail order packages worth $85 dollars.

The homeowner wished to remain anonymous, like a neighbor who also suffered losses. Someone stole about $200 dollars worth of packages from her mailbox.

Both victims said they contacted the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday.

"I understand there has been some theft out of mailboxes in this vicinity," said Richard A. Wallis.

Since last week - Black Friday - several people who shopped online have become victims of postal theft.

To prevent it from happening again, some neighbors decided to open accounts at their nearby post office to pick up mail instead of having it delivered.

"I would think a P.O. Box. That would be safer than a box beside the road," said Morris Johnson.

He believes the rural community suffers from theft because so many packages are left in boxes at the side of the road while homeowners are away.

A US postal worker encourages people to check their mailboxes daily.

Folks in the area, also plan to look out for one another and keep an eye on unfamiliar vehicles.

When the government employees refuse to do the job they are payed to do , then the citizens will have to take up the slack. This is why gun sales are "thru the roof". It's going to get worse when the administration starts cutting back on the "handouts" to those that refuse to work. Citizens will not be able to depend on law enforcement, because they are already overloaded, having to deal with all of the dopeheads, drunks, gang punks, prostitutes, pedophiles, and other human debris. Citizens will have to pay attention to their surroundings, and deal with the thugs harshly when the need arises.

You know, it just torques my jaws when people say truly stupid things like " the rural community suffers from theft because so many packages are left in boxes at the side of the road while homeowners are away." The rural community suffers from theft because of THIEVES who reach into their mail boxes and take stuff that isn't theirs. It is against the law to even open a US Postal box that doesn't belong to you, which is why, in rural areas, you'll sometimes see a rolled up flyer stuck to the outside of a mailbox. Are their things like PO Boxes people can use to be a bit more secure? Yeah, but the FAULT is with the thieves. Where are the Postal Inspectors, who are supposed to investigate, arrest and prosecute postal theft? Folks in the area need to be armed while they watch out for each other and SHOOT those dad-blasted scumbag thieves.
