A rash of burglaries has police in Seguin sending out a warning.

It seems thieves are sneaking under cars and stealing a part that can be pretty valuable.

The first sign that something is wrong is a loud roaring sound. What victims then find out is thieves have sawed off their vehicle's catalytic converter.

"We had heard that there had been a rash of thefts in the area," said Shawn Driscoll of Seguin Chevrolet.

Seguin police said thieves sawed off 9 catalytic converters from trucks at Wyatt Arp dealership and stole another 6 from Seguin Chevrolet. Investigators said the crooks are cashing in on the precious metals inside.

"The platinum, palladium and rhodium is coated on the outside of this, and this is where the money's at," explained Zachary Lenius of Big Cat Trading.

Thieves can get somewhere between $25 to more than $100 in quick cash for the part. But investigators say catalytic converters can cost you around $1,200 to replace.

Unfortunately, there's no way to track or identify the stolen parts.

Some News 4 viewers have been asking us to check into this crime over the last few months. Only one other police department in our area has received a complaint about similar thefts. That was in Balcones Heights.

If you have any information about the catalytic converter thefts, please call the Seguin Police Department at (830) 379-2123.
