SAN ANTONIO - You've probably received one of those letters from the Census Bureau emphasizing how important it is to fill out. Most people we asked knew it was important because it was connected to bringing money to our area. But it goes beyond that.
Lori Campos told us,"because government programs are based on numbers, if people don't fill it out then the government doesn't know how many people are living in an area."
W.J. Smith agreed saying, "we get the funding hopefully we get the funding we need for the things that's needed for the infrastructure of the city."
If you haven't already gotten the letter, you will. It's a heads-up you'll be getting a census form in the mail in about a week, and emphasizes how important it is. It's about getting our piece of the government pie. But in real terms News 4 WOAI wanted to know - what's that mean to us? Money for what?
The U.S. Census Bureau says it runs the gamit. For example...the U.S. Census Bureau spokesman Efren Salinas tells us "this is money that goes to your roads, to your hospitals, to your schools. These numbers are extremely important."
It also will determine things like health care benefits. like the number of flu shot doses that are sent here. Those are based on census numbers taken every ten years. And believe it or not it also can affect whether or not a business decides to come to San Antonio.
According to Salinas, "when they decide are we going to put a store here, which of course will in turn generate revenue or tax revenue for that area, they look at the census numbers."
Those numbers translate into possible customers.
