WASHINGTON (AP) - The fate of Texas' controversial new voter ID law - which requires voters to show photo identification at the polls - is set to be decided this week in a federal court in Washington.

The state, arguing the law will prevent voter fraud, is seeking to persuade a three-judge panel to uphold the statute. The Justice Department and a slew of intervening groups say the law disproportionately affects minority voters, violating the federal Voting Rights Act. They will seek to have it thrown out.

The case will be a test of the Voting Rights Act, passed in 1965, which was designed to protect minorities' rights to vote.

The trial begins Monday.

For those of you poo-pooing the "illegal voting," there are many ways to verify. The only problem is that since the states don't really uphold the laws already set in place, they don't have a system to check the numbers. Florida is rife with illegal voters according to some polls taken in the past few years, and it's happening in many other states as well according to various news agencies and investigations across the states. Folks will believe or disbelieve what they wish. There is enough identity theft and fraud out there to prove a multitude of sins.

No problem, Lastchance. If you visit the DPS website, it will show a list of valid IDs required to get a Texas picture ID. It is not necessarily an easy process: multiple IDs are often required, some elderly don't know how to get a birth certificate, many counties don't have DPS offices to get the ID, many people (elderly, disabled, poor) dont have the means to get to the office, and a few won't pay the costs. Not only is it a pain to get a license, it often isn't necessary: disabled and elderly often don't drive, some cant afford a car and have no need for a license, and some citizens live their lives on a cash basis. Now take a look at the existing voting requirements: there are several ways to demonstrate you are a Texas citizen without requiring 700,000 to get a drivers license. Finally, imagine being an illegal immigrant, trying to stay off the radar - it is simply ridiculous to put your name and address on something so you can vote. At the voting booth, you are required to have some form of ID, just not necessarily a drivers license. If you are an illegal immigrant, it would be difficult and dangerous to vote. Conclusions: 1) illegals aren't getting caught voting because they aren't voting. 2) the only people harmed by the stringent Voter ID requirements are the elderly, disabled and poor (often minorities)

MCC knows it doesn't take facts and knowledge to argue with a liberal because they never use or accept them

MCC doesn't remember that I don't have to prove he is full of s**t because everyone already knows and accepts that fact.

Flounder, if you believe you have better knowledge of the number of registered voters without a drivers license, you are welcome to share it. I assure you it will be close to 700.000, (hint: start with documents the state provided to the Feds). While you are at it, find the number of people who voted illegally at the polling site. I assure you it is minuscule. (FYI the DOJ has also asked for evidence that voter fraud is occurring, but Texas hasn't provided any).

Okay, last point. To say that needing an ID to vote leads to an impact on the poor, the elderly, and minorities may be an arguing point of Democrats, true. Does that mean there are no poor, elderly, or minority Independents or Republicans? IDs will verify identities for all voting preferences, not just Democrats; How is that a bad thing?
