CONROE, Texas (AP) - Texas child welfare officials say two Houston-area children found living in an old school bus have been returned to their parents.
The Houston Chronicle reports an East Texas judge this month ordered that the children - ages 5 and 12 - be returned to Sherrie and Mark Shorten.
The children were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services in March after a postal worker raised concerns about their living conditions. An aunt was caring for them at the time because their parents were in prison.
The Shortens were released from federal prison earlier this year. They served 18 months on charges that they embezzled money from Hurricane Ike victims. The family still lives in the now-refurbished bus on a property near Splendora, about 36 miles northeast of Houston.
