SAN ANTONIO -- A teenager who was in handcuffs and leg shackles escaped from custody and somehow managed to jump onto a moving train near Downtown.

The 16-year-old state inmate was being transported by a detention officer when he acted like he was going to be sick. When the officer pulled over the vehicle in the 300 block of Center Street and opened the door, the teen pretended he was vomiting. He then jumped up and ran away. The teen squeezed through a space between two fences and jumped onto a train traveling Northeast.

The train stopped a short time later near Salado Creek at Splashtown. Officers searched the area and launched Eagle to search by air, but did not find the teen.

The teen was serving time for a robbery and being taken to a maximum-security facility near Waco.

No doubt the Probation Department will do a full blown investigation on the detention officer. Forget the running away in shackles....how do you board a moving train in leg shackles?! Either this kid was fantastically agile or he wasn't really shackled like he was supposed to be during transport and now the detention officer doesn't want them to know that he relaxed on the rules.

I'm with you on this one, Jimkata!!! And, I'll say again.....I really wonder why so many booking photos have facial damage to the arrested one, male or female? Believe me, I'm NOT taking up for the criminal, but I've really, really got to wonder about the consistent facial damage in published photos. All of this could make one think that SAPD is incompetent and abusive during the arrest?!?!?!?! Just saying!!
